The Motivation and Engagement Scale (MES)

The MES is a useful resource to evaluate a student's approach to learning. The survey is accompanied by individual lessons which target areas of weakness pinpointed by the survey. This lessons can be modified for individual needs.

As described by the MES the behaviours and thoughts associated with a successful student are Learning Focus, Valuing, Planning, Task Management, Persistence and Self Belief.  The negative behaviours and thoughts associated with a lack of success are:

  • Disengagement,
  • Self Sabotage,
  • Failure Avoidance,
  • Anxiety and Uncertain Control.

A quality school life survey is available through the DEC Portal, which allows teachers and school executives to evaluate the attitudes and the behaviours of students about school.

At the SRSP we have used the results of the survey to work with students on behavioural attitudes as it allows for a quick overview of the student's strengths and weaknesses.

Whole school or group analysis of the survey results is valuable by recording and sending the scores to the School Data and System Support Officer.

To enquire phone 9707 6278 or email a support officer...duran.acikgoz@det.nsw.edu.au.  The results are usefully returned within a few days.

Visit the quality school life survey website to access the DEC webpage and download the survey and support information.
